Pedro Ribera was born in Spain but settled in Paris, where he trained under Léon Bonnat and Albert Maignan. He continued to travel widely between 1900 and 1930, visiting South America, North Africa, and the Far East. This painting depicts a blooming Japanese cherry blossom or sakura in Kyoto. Known to flower only for a short period in spring, this plant often symbolises the transience of life.
