The Van Blarenberghe were a large family of painters based in Lille. Louis-Nicolas is best known for his battle scenes (painted during the years of the war of Succession in Spain) and village scenes such as the present work. The Van Blarenberghe specialised in miniatures, and this format was often used to decorate the top of oval boxes.
