GEORGE III CARVED AND PARCEL-GILT MAHOGANY LOOKING GLASS OF AMERICAN INTEREST, CIRCA 1765
the backboard inscribed Thomas Eden Salem, Mass
Height 44 ½ in. by Width 20 ¼ in.
This looking glass was once owned by the Salem Captain Thomas Eden (1723-1768), a successful merchant mariner born in England who traded independently in the West Indies and built his house on Summer Street in Salem in 1762, where he lived with his family and kept a shop. Eden died young at the age of forty-five, only six years after his house was built. Eden Street in Salem, which runs between Summit Avenue and Green Street, is named for the sea captain.
