Description

VERY FINE AND RARE SET OF SIX FEDERAL CARVED MAHOGANY SHIELD-BACK SERPENTINE-FRONT SIDE CHAIRS, RHODE ISLAND, CIRCA 1800

finely carved splats of drapery and bellflower design.

Height 38 ½ in.

Israel Sack, Inc., New York.

American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, vol. 10 (Alexandria, VA: Highland House Publishers, 1987), 2699;

Rhode Island Furniture Archive number: RIF1122.

The bold sweep of the serpentine seat, the shape of the shield and the exposed mortise of the rear stile distinguish this form from the more prevalent related New York variety. A nearly identical chair is in the collection of the Rhode Island School of Design (see Christopher P. Monkhouse and Thomas S. Michie, American Furniture in Pendleton House, (Providence, RI: Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, 1986), pp. 180-1, no. 123).
