woodblock print, from an untitled series of Six Jewel Rivers (Mu Tamagawa), signed Utamaro hitsu, published by Matsumura Tatsuemon, circa 1795-96, (no publisher’s seal on this impression)


Vertical oban: 37.8 x 25.2 cm., 14⅞ x 9⅞ in.

This print is from a series of six bust portraits of Yoshiwara courtesans. In each design there is a fan-shaped cartouche containing landscapes and indicators associated with each Jewel River, overlaid by a poem paper-shaped cartouche containing a kyoka poem.
