Description

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

Old View of the Boat-Bridge at Sano in Kozuke Province (Kozuke Sano funabashi no kozu)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu, censor's seal kiwame, published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834

Horizonal oban: 25 x 37.7 cm., 9⅞ x 14¾ in.

A line of boats joined together side-by-side using planks forms a ‘boat bridge’ (funabashi) in this snow-covered landscape. This type of bridge was not uncommon, but the boat bridge at Sano in Kozuke province depicted here was especially well known.
