Description
Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1864)
Miyajima in Aki Province (Aki no Miyajima)
Edo period, 19th century
woodblock print, from the series Pictures in the Red-hair [Dutch] Oil-painting Style (Komo abura-e fu), signed Konomi ni makase Kunisada egaku, published by Yamaguchiya Tobei (Kinkodo), circa 1825
Horizontal oban: 23.5 x 35.8 cm., 9 ¼ x 14⅛ in.
This series of landscape prints uses European perspective and shading, combined with conventional ukiyo-e style figures. Even the signatures are spelled out phonetically and written sideways in imitation of European writing and each print has an elaborate border imitating imported embossed leather. See Sebastian Izzard, Kunisada’s World, (New York, 1993), pg. 96-7.
