TRAVERS, P.L.
Mary Poppins Comes Back. Lovat Dickson & Thompson Limited, 1935
8vo, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ("To Mr Freeman Lewis | thanking him for his | work on 'Mary Poppins' | from | P.L. Travers") on front free endpaper, illustrations by Mary Shepard, original pictorial cream cloth, slight browning and spotting, split at gutter after frontispiece with first gathering slightly loose, some colouring to illustrations, spotting and soiling to binding, facsimile dust-jacket
P.L. Travers rarely inscribed her books: ABPC records only three inscribed copies of this title sold at auction between 1989 and 2013. Moreover, she was very rarely effusive and the present inscription is remarkable in this respect. The recipient appears to be the publisher Freeman Lewis (1908-1976), a pioneer in mass-market paperbacks. Freeman Lewis was a nephew of the novelist Sinclair Lewis and began his career in publishing in 1930.
