Elias Grossman (1898-1947) was an American artist. Gandhi sat for him during his 1931 visit to London for the Round Table Conference. Grossman recalled the sitting in 1934 when promoting an exhibition at the Jewish Club of New York: "Only when he had heard that the artist had made etchings of Mussolini, Einstein and especially Tagore, did Gandhi agree to sit for him. He would sit on the floor, and Grossman would work lying flat on his stomach. Monday was the day of silence, and the only way in which the two men could communicate with one another was by passing notes."
