Description

CHURCHILL, SIR WINSTON

Vintage deed box, the front hand-lettered in gold paint "the Right Honourable Winston S. Churchill, M.P."

tin, 310 x 390 x 290mm, with brass lock and hinged handles, painted black, chips and wear to paintwork

AN EVOCATIVE PERSONAL RELIC. Churchill owned several such boxes for his personal documents and records, which are distinct from despatch boxes and similar boxes for government papers. The current box probably dates from before 1922 as the inscription, whilst carefully giving Churchill's official title, does not record that he is a Companion of Honour (CH). In 1931 Mrs Pearman, his secretary, ordered three boxes to match "those that I have in the office" (see Churchill College, Cambridge CHAR/1/228/24-27). Three deed boxes are still found at Chartwell (refs. 1101958 and 1101986) but they do not have the attractive lettering found on this example. A pair of Clemmie Churchill's deed boxes (with simpler lettering in white paint) were sold in these rooms as part of the Mary Soames sale (17 December 2014, lot 65, £10,625).
