Men of Mark. London: Duckworth & Co.; New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913
FIRST EDITION, 4to (309 x 230mm.), PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER on the half-title "For Herbert Lambert / from his friend / Alvin Langdon Coburn / 28th January 1925", 33 photogravure portraits, each tipped onto a numbered mount with a printed facsimile of the sitter's signature, publisher's buckram-backed cloth, upper cover titled in gilt, flat spine, marks to endpapers, binding rubbed and waterstained
AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, presented by Coburn to British photographer Herbert Lambert FRPS (1882–1936), known for his portraits of professional musicians and composers. In 1926 Lambert became managing director of the Elliott & Fry portrait studio. Lambert is also responsible for saving many of Henry Fox Talbot's early photographs, by re-photographing them for posterity; he was a long friend of Talbot's granddaughter Matilda Talbot (1871-1958).
This photobook includes portraits of Bernard Shaw, G.K. Chesterton, H.G. Wells, Rodin, Henry James, Theodore Roosevelt, Max Beerbohm, H. Belloc, W.B. Yeats, Mark Twain, J.M. Barrie, and Matisse.
