FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed to the Duke of Clarence [later King William IV] and dated 17 September 1804, 8vo (212 x 125mm.), 7 engraved plates, 3pp. advertisements at end, modern red morocco-backed boards, some offsetting from plates, lacking half-title
Entirely self-taught, the author earned his living teaching mathematics, geography, navigation, and surveying, initially in Aberdeen, latterly in London, at a school in George Street, Trinity Square. Mackay published several works on navigation and mathematics, some of which went to second editions.
