Description
RACKHAM, ARTHUR
"The Witch Climbed Up" (from 'Rapunzel', The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm)
302 by 185mm., fine ink and watercolour drawing, signed and dated lower left "Arthur Rackham | 00 + 09", remnant of original frame backing board attached with artist's name and address, mounted, framed and glazed, some slight fading
This piece has been in a private collection for over forty years.
This fine watercolour, which wonderfully evokes the predatory nature of Mother Gothel, is developed from Rackham's original black and white illustration from 1900. When first published, by Freemantle and Co., the illustration was entitled "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair" and the witch started her ascent from ground level. In 1909 Rackham took his original drawing, erased the picture below the witch's foot and created a coloured watercolour which is significantly expanded in scale and, indeed, emotional power.
