This panel is modelled after a painting dated from 1615 by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens now in the collections of the Musei Capitolini, Rome (acc. no. PC 67). The painting depicts the brothers Romulus and Remus being cared for by the she-wolf, the god of the Tiber river sitting on his urn, a water nymph, a woodpecker that watches over the twins to bring them food, and a shepherd discovering the infants. All but the river god, nymph and shepherd are depicted in this panel.
