A Russian carved hardstone paperweight, 

third quarter 19th century, attributed to the Stebakov Lapidary Workshop, Ekaterinburg


with an arrangement of fruits, including a pear, raspberries, grapes and currants of hardstones including rhodonite, gypsum, carnelian and nephrite, on a black marble surface above a grey Kalgan jasper plinth; together with another paperweight with a carved amethyst grape cluster and nephrite, on a moulded malachite base, small losses

(the largest) 6.5cm. high, 19.8cm. long; 12cm. deep

(the smaller) 4cm. high, 9cm. long, 6.5cm. deep

A related paperweight at the Victoria & Albert Museum was acquired in 1869 for the institution, exhibited in the Paris Universal Exhibition two years earlier (inv. nr 1001-1869). Made by the Stebakov factory, in Ekaterinburg, founded by Ivan Sergeyevich Stebakov in 1845 or 1849. He established a shop in St. Petersburg, and exhibited in international exhibitions, producing small objects such as the present lot but also boxes and small tables.
