Stewart's collegiate career at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is considered one of the most outstanding in NCAA history. She led the Huskies to four consecutive national championships from 2013 to 2016, earning the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player award each year—a feat unmatched in both men's and women's college basketball. Her dominance was further recognized with multiple national Player of the Year honors during her tenure at UConn.

In the 2016 WNBA Draft, Stewart was selected first overall by the Seattle Storm. She made an immediate impact, securing the WNBA Rookie of the Year award. Her tenure with the Storm was marked by two WNBA championships in 2018 and 2020, with Stewart being named the WNBA Finals MVP on both occasions. She also earned the league's regular-season MVP award in 2018. After a successful stint in Seattle, Stewart signed with the New York Liberty in 2023, leading them to their first WNBA title in 2024 and earning her second regular-season MVP award that same year.

Internationally, Stewart has been a cornerstone for USA Basketball. She has won two Olympic gold medals (2016 in Rio de Janeiro and 2020 in Tokyo) and three FIBA World Cup gold medals (2014, 2018, and 2022). Her contributions have been pivotal in maintaining the United States' dominance in women's basketball on the global stage.

Off the court, Stewart has been proactive in enhancing opportunities for women's basketball players. In 2024, she co-founded Unrivaled, a professional 3x3 women's basketball league aimed at providing players with domestic offseason opportunities, reducing the need to play overseas.
