Description

FLORIANI, PIETRO PAOLO

Diffesa et offesa delle piazze.... seconda impressione. Venice: Francesco Baba, 1654

folio (317 x 220mm.), engraved title-page, engraved portrait of the author, woodcut initials and headpieces, 44 engraved plates (1 folding), later vellum, occasional light damp-staining, folding plate misbound between pp. 80-81

Floriani (1585-1638) served Philip III in Madrid before entering the service of Archduke Leopold, working on the fortifications of Brisach, Vienna and Pressburg. He later worked for the Barberini in Rome and Ferrara before being asked to assist with the defences of Valletta. As a result of his work on Malta, the part of the town where he set up new defences was named after him.
