Description

BENTIVOGLIO, GUIDO

History of the Warrs of Flanders ... Englished by the Right Honorable Henry Earl of Monmouth. London: Humphrey Moseley, 1654

folio (300 x 200mm.), first edition in English, engraved portrait frontispiece, title page in red and black, folding engraved map ("A New Mape of the XVII Provinces of Low Germanie [John Speed] Anno 1626"), and 22 engraved portraits (some signed "Ro. Vaughan"), contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, hinges weak, lettering piece detached, lacking one engraved portrait, short fold tear to map

Bentivoglio was papal nuncio to the imperial court in Brussels. This is one of several translations of Italian historical works by Henry Cary, Earl of Monmouth, which he carried out during the 1640s and 1650s; he had been a member of Parliament before the Civil War but as a royalist he decided to retire from public life.
