FIRST EDITION, folio (352 x 247mm.), woodcut illustrations (some double-page, including maps), old carta rustica, lacking 2A1, upper hinge broken, minor staining (also to binding)


First edition, dedicated to Philip II. Maggi, a scholar rather than a soldier, compiled the writings on fortification of Fusti Castriotto (died c. 1563), superintendent of fortifications in France, and of Francesco Montemelini on Rome's fortifications, along with the details of battle formations by Giovaccino da Coniano who had commanded Italian troops fighting with the English in Boulogne in the 1540s.
