Engraved document on vellum (18 1/2 x 14 7/8 in.; 472 x 370 mm), accomplished in a clerical hand, Philadelphia, 27 August 1795, appointing Nanning J. Nischer a "Lieutenant in the Second Sub Legion," countersigned by the Secretary of War ("Timothy Pickering"), embossed paper seal, large vignette of eagle grasping olive branch and fasces of arrows at top, large vignette of banners, symbols of peace, ordnance, and arms at bottom, by Thackara & Vallanc, recording docket; backed with cloth, minor losses at upper and lower right corners, small holes at lower margin from previous framing.
