Double Mazer Bowl

burr maple and silver gilt

mounted with a silver roundel enclosing the arms of the Dukes of Brunswick

23.5cm., 9¾in

Double mazers originated in Germany in the late medieval period and consist of two cups sandwiched together. Pinto (op. cit.) records that the upper smaller cup was used as a tasting vessel by the cup bearer to prevent poisoning. "Tasting according to John Russell's Boke of Nurture of 1452 was done for those of royal blood" or high status.
