Jacob Marell, trained in the German centre of still life painting, Frankfurt, under Georg Flegel (c. 1565–1638). During the 17th century Frankfurt had become a safe haven for numerous refugees who had been displaced from the Netherlands following the Reformation. He relocated to Utrecht in 1632, studying with Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606–1684), where he also came under the influence of the Bosschaert family of flower painters and Roelandt Savery (1576–1639).
