The art deco inspired Cartier Tortue was first created in 1912 as the third watch model Cartier had ever released. Long considered the little brother amongst the iconic Cartier Santos and Tank, the Cartier Tortue only became popular in the late 1920s as Cartier had decided to integrate complications such as the repeating or single button chronograph function to its module.
In 1999, when Cartier had decided to reestablish its focus from quartz movements to high end watchmaking, they had collaborated with François-Paul Journe, Vianney Hatler and Denis Flageollet to recreate the brand’s icons known as the Collection Privée Cartier Paris with the Cartier Tortue at the center of it.
The present Tortue XL Tourbillon model made in a limited series of 25 pieces is truly a watch of fine craftsmanship. Bearing a tourbillon escapement shown on the dial at 6 o’clock which helps regulate the time, and a fascinating display of retrograde hours and minutes, this watch represents the ideal blend of Cartier’s heritage and innovations.
