ADIDAS, ADIDAS TOP TEN EQT, SIZE 16

Rubber, Leather, Cotton, Synthetic

1996

Before his association with Nike in June of 2003 and the development of one of the most renowned performance basketball sneaker lines, at the age of 17, Kobe Bryant entered into a six-year agreement with adidas.

In October of 1996, shortly after signing with adidas, Bryant was the focus of an adidas photoshoot at Will Rogers State Beach in California. The shoot occurred before Bryant's debut in the NBA. The images captured that day, showcasing Bryant executing dunks against the backdrop of Santa Monica's skies, have since become iconic images from his early career.

During the photoshoot, an adidas employee, who is now the consignor of this lot, was present. In a letter of provenance addressed to Sotheby’s, the consignor recounts a conversation with Bryant, that resulted in these signatures. Remarkably rare, this pair bears two full-name Kobe Bryant signatures, one on each toe.

The sneakers are accompanied by a letter of provenance from the consignor. Sotheby’s has obtained documentation verifying the consignor’s employment with adidas, which includes a business card, an adidas employee Photo ID, and a photograph of the consignor alongside Kobe Bryant. The photo was not taken at the Rookie photoshoot.

The sneakers are accompanied by a letter from James Spence in regard to the signatures.

Sotheby's does not believe this pair was worn by Bryant.

adidas sneakers symbolize a pivotal time in Bryant’s career, marked by astonishing performances and glimpses of his immense potential, they hold significance in Bryant’s narrative, representing his encounters with MJ, his time with Shaquille O’Neal, and his first three NBA championships.

An embodiment of the competitive spirit, it was Bryant’s ability to attack each game with an unparalleled desire to win that made him one of this generation’s greatest. When Kobe retired in 2016, he did so as a 5-time NBA champion, a league MVP, a 2-time scoring champion and a 12-time All-Defensive team selection. A complete player and an ambassador of the game, Bryant was the face of the Los Angeles Lakers and one of the biggest names in the NBA during his 20-year career.
