Willem de Klerk was initially strongly influenced by his fellow Dordrecht artists Abraham and Jacob van Strij, but following travels to Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany in the 1820s and '30s, he began to carve his own path, and produce very personal watercolours of considerable quality, such as this example.  A fine winter landscape by De Klerk was sold, Amsterdam, Christie's, 8 November 2000, lot 193.
