Description
Florida
Constitution Adopted by the Convention of 1885 [caption title]. Tallahassee: Floridian Steam Printing House, 1889
8vo (226 x 146 mm). 39 pp., signed on the title-page by Jonathan L. Crawford; light toning to extremities, small closed tears to fore-edge, last leaf a bit worn (not affecting text). Half morocco antique.
An early printing of the 1885 Florida Constitution. This constitution codified segregation, and instituted a poll tax, which disproportionately disenfranchised black Americans. Florida would adopt a new constitution in 1968.
