The Triumph of Pulcinella

oil on canvas

canvas: 19⅞ by 35⅝ in.; 50.5 by 90.5 cm.

framed: 25¼ by 40⅞ ; 64.1 by 103.8 cm.

This lively scene depicts the fictionalized triumphal procession of Pulcinella, a character from the Italian commedia dell’arte easily recognized by his hunchbacked physique, bulbous nose, and conical white hat. The satirical subject is a parody on the lofty artistic tradition of elaborate triumphal processions, historically conducted as lavish ceremonies to celebrate military achievements and viewed with great esteem. Here, the comedic figure of Pulcinella occupies the seat of honor beneath a ceremonious, red baldachin while other recognizable commedia dell’arte figures march ahead, leading the parade.
