In this dynamic composition, Verburgh conveys the atmospheric tension of a rising storm, a captivating departure from his typically serene landscapes. Windswept trees bend to the right and a shadow eclipses most of the foreground, suggesting the presence of dense, dark clouds beyond the pictorial realm. Verburgh often animates his pictures with small-scale figures dwarfed by vast landscapes. Here, a hunter with a rifle, his hound, and a galloping horseman appear to be headed directly into the storm and a man crosses a bridge over choppy waters. The tempestuous waves dissipate beneath the bridge yielding to a calm, still surface, sheltered from the gale’s disruptive forces.
