After the character design is approved, the next step in pre-production for an aminated feature is to create a maquette.  Maquettes—the production-used ‘Norman’ maquette in the present lot was hand-sculpted by Kent Melton—serve as artists’ models, reference points of both character and look, and allow animation artists to solve design problems in advance while providing a real feel for the puppet before it is made.

A bespoke element of Laika Studios’ stop-motion animation process is the creation of “Rapid Production” faces—which are 3D-printed, magnetized faces used on their character puppets to quickly and seamlessly change the character’s expression in a given scene. The present lot includes 4 production-used Rapid Production Faces that can be used to switch out the expression on the mounted Norman head—screen-used in frame 28.271—that is also included with the lot.
