Offered in this lot is a single shoe sample of the Adidas Kobe 2 “Graphite,” signed by Kobe Bryant. Included with the shoe is a limited edition Kobe Action Replica figure, dressed in a miniature version of the exclusive Adidas apparel collection released alongside the Kobe 2. The figure is outfitted in a leather tracksuit, an Adidas Kobe t-shirt, and a scaled-down pair of the Kobe 2 sneakers. The packaging reads: “The closest duplication possible of the one player who could never possibly be duplicated.”
Also included is a Kobe Bryant–branded backpack inspired by the Adidas Kobe line. The design draws directly from the aesthetic of the sneakers and features Kobe Bryant’s Adidas branding throughout.
The signed shoe includes a sample hang tag, identifying it as a salesman sample produced in 2001.
The lot is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the consignor, a former Adidas Basketball executive who obtained Kobe’s signature during their travels together.
To Whom It May Concern,
In 2000, I was working as an adidas executive at the adidas America HQ in Oregon.
I received these shoes (and backpack, doll) at that time as I was heading up a group working directly on the Kobe Two (and Three) signature range of products. We typically worked with samples (as part of the production process) that either never made it to retail (Kobe Three) and/or were extremely limited.
The Kobe Two, Graphite (Signed). This shoe has cult-like stature in the sneaker world. I traveled with KB, and he signed this shoe during one of our travels. This shoe has been packed away and stored in climate-controlled environments since the 2000s. They are in perfect shape, have never been worn. They have rarely been shown.
The Kobe Doll. No other athlete ever received a doll from adidas. (or other brands, as far as I know) Kobe is wearing a limited leather suit, which was also for sale.
The Kobe Backpack. The design was inspired by the Audi/adidas shoe design. Very unique and limited, it was part of a limited apparel collection.
The lot is accompanied by a letter from James Spence in regards to the signature.
