Description
MAROZZO, ACHILLE
Opera nova... de l'arte de l'armi. [Modena, c. 1540]
4to (203 x 152mm.), title within elaborate woodcut border depicting knights in armour, woodcut illustrations (some full-page), with final blank, contemporary limp vellum (a remboitage?), title-page slightly shaved at foot, small repair to P8, new endpapers
A reprint of the 1536 first edition, also printed in Modena and using the same woodblocks, of Marozzo's richly illustrated treatise on duelling. Marozzo was a Bolognese master swordsman; this treatise is considered the first substantial manual of fencing and includes rules for duels between noblemen. The numerous woodcut describe detailed manoevres by swordsmen in elaborate contemporary costume.
