A fine Japanese lacquer cabinet and stand
Signed Shojusai Kakushu and kao [cursive monogram]
Meiji period, late 19th century
Of rectangular form with double fronted doors and engraved copper-gilt mounts, finely decorated in gold, silver, red and black hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, keuchi, hirame, kimpun, nashiji and inlays of mother-of-pearl on a polished black ground, boldly rendered with a large cargo boat approaching a bay among pines on a shore, further sails in the waters and cranes in flight before Mount Fuji, the sides with falcons before cascading waterfalls, the spray droplets delineated in silver lacquer, the reverse with a falcon on rockwork surrounded by crashing waves and Mount Fuji in the distance, the double fronted doors opening to reveal eleven drawers decorated in togidashi-e with various bird feathers, the interiors of the doors each decorated with red-capped cranes and stylised waves, signed Shojusai Kakushu and kao [cursive monogram]
