Prior to the publication in 2005 of Baukje Coenen's extensive article on the drawings of Van der Cooghen, there was relatively little agreement on attributions to this talented Haarlem draughtsman.1  Two similarly large figure studies in the same combination of media, both in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, are, in slightly different ways, very comparable with this previously unknown sheet, the attribution of which to Van der Cooghen Baukje Coenen has kindly endorsed. Interestingly, the two Rotterdam drawings are dated 1643 and 1666, suggesting that the artist's style remained relatively consistent over the years.
