Description
Newton, Sir Issac
Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica... Editio tertia aucta & emendata. London: William and John Innys, printers to the Royal Society, 1726
4to (245 x 190 mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait by George Vertue after Vanderbank, privilege leaf bound before preface, woodcut text diagrams, engraved text diagram on p.506; a lovely crisp copy without spotting, but faulted only by some offsetting to title-page from portrait, the first leaf of preface with a closed marginal tear not intruding into text and a paper flaw to the Catalogus Librorum leaf at end. Contemporary speckled calf; joints rubbed and starting with some exposure of cords, but holding, spine label and spine gilt a little rubbed, spot of loss to head of spine.
Third edition and the basis for all subsequent editions of "the greatest work in the history of science" (PMM).
This revised and enlarged edition was the last to be issued in the author's lifetime and contained a new preface by Newton himself (and omitting the name of the now-deceased Leibniz from the section on the calculus).
