Masterfully carved with the light reddish-brown burl preserved against the dark zitan, the table screen showcases the natural grain of the wood and resembles an elephant trunk, resulting in an exceptional work displaying a blend of craftsmanship with organic patterns and materials.


Compare a burlwood brushpot signed by Qian Qianyi (1582-1664) now preserved in the Palace Museum, Taipei (accession no. gu diao 19N), showcasing a similar form, material, and craftmanship as the current brushpot, and possibly carved by the same hand.


「紫檀癭木象鼻硯屏」,天然紫檀兼生癭皮,木質與癭皮皆堅實遒勁,歲久包漿瑩徹,形如具洞穴象鼻山屏。藝匠保留赭黃色天然錯節的癭皮,妙造成象首,在紫檀黝黑的襯色中,顯得格外具象與奪目。象首癭皮皴皺,瘤點簇聚,其紋理或方,或圓,或密結,或鬆散,或直點下竄,或曲繞如雲水,極盡木紋之美,於自然中見奇趣。藝匠并將其上下端截平,略施斧斤即成文房小硯屏,屏背隨形置宜,高低起伏勾勒數刀,即與天然紋理渾然一體。象鼻硯屏構思巧妙,刀法簡古有味,允稱奇器。


台北故宮博物院有清宮舊藏錢謙益(1582〜1664)銘「癭木靈芝筆筒」[1]。與本器的意境、趣味、造法及自然老化等現象參照,自是異曲同工之妙。藝匠無署名,或係出自一人之手。錢謙益同年遺民老友,雕刻妙天下的濮仲謙(1582〜?)。據載于清初順治五年(1648)曾為其夫人柳如是製作竹器。 [2] 張岱(1597〜1689?)《陶庵夢憶》記載,吾友南京濮仲謙所製作品,尤喜樹根盤結,或是竹節支離,即略施斧斤,勾勒數刀,遂成奇器,所享價幾與金銀爭重,妙絕一時。[3]
