The Italian designer Renzo Mongiardino (1916-1998) created some of the most important interiors of the postwar period, including those of Gianni Agnelli, Aristotle Onassis, Lee Radziwill and Gianni Versace, and was also a set designer for film and opera.

A similar pair of bookcases has been sold at Christie's Paris, 6 November 2015, lot 956.
