Description
rectangular with curved corners, the lid painted en plein with a group of shepherds and fishermen by a lake, a waterfall to the right and an opalescent pink enamel sky over sunburst engine-turning in the background, white taille d'épargne floral borders within opaque light blue enamel bands, partially rubbed maker's mark L&S crowned within three rosettes and three sprigs, the right rim numbered 25, later engraved in script: S.B.,
10.2 cm; 4 ⅛ in. long
The shape, size and weight of the present lot in combination with the choice of specific enamel colours and the style of the painting suggest that this box was made in Berlin rather than Hanau. A certain similarity to gold boxes by Frères Jordan from the beginning of the nineteenth century cannot be denied. Furthermore, another gold and enamel box from the Alan and Simone Hartman collection (sold Sotheby's New York, 17 June 2024, lot 71), also struck with the crowned maker's mark L&S, is overlaid with a gold filigree decoration which has been attributed to Berlin (see Haydn Williams, 18th-Century Snuffboxes: The David and Mikhail Iakobachvili Collection, vol I, London, 2024, p. 411). Moreover it is interesting to note that the different sets of three smaller marks in the form of rosettes, sprigs or wreaths within cartouches framing the L&S maker's marks seem to be interchangeable with those around the maker's marks on gold boxes that have been identified as being of Berlin origin, such as examples by Frères Jordan or Gustav Wancke.
