Description
Sky-Blue Celestine
Sakoany Mine, Katsepy Commune, Mitsinjo Department,
Boeny Region, Mahajanga (Majunga) Province, Madagascar
7¾ by 5¼ x 5½ inches (19.2 x 13.4 x 14 cm). Largest crystals 4¾ inches (12.1 cm). Custom lucite base.
All of the crystals are terminated and have a very bright, glassy luster.
Also known as celestite, the sky-blue mineral celestine gets its name from the Latin, caelum, a word meaning heaven or sky. It is comprised of strontium sulfate, and is often used in fireworks and metal admixtures.
This specimen represents a fine example of the classic sky-blue strontium sulfate prismatic crystals, and has been carefully extracted from a natural volcanic geode.
