Description
Château Mouton Rothschild 1924
Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé
u. ms, heavily deteriorated labels, bin-soiled and scuffed capsules, 1 corroded capsule, 1 signs of old seepage
Baron Philippe arrived at the Château in 1922, at the age of 20, and this vintage at Mouton was a triumph for the property, fittingly vaunted by the Carlu label and the announcement to the world that Mouton was now château bottled. It was a large vintage and bottling took place in 1927, as was the custom at this time for the top wines. It must have been glorious when young and I would have given anything to have seen it at 20 years old (a physical impossibility!), but it remains a stunning wine, sweet, concentrated (in spite of that big crop), exciting and multi-layered - perfect old Claret.
