A silver and cloisonné enamel icon of Christ, Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1896-1908


gilt arch frame decorated with polychrome enamel flowers and scrolls in blue, with beaded borders and geometric corners, velvet reverse, inscribed around the edge of the frame 'From the clerks of the chancellor's office of the Kursk region, 1915, to the deeply respected Prince Nikolai Leonidov Obolensky', struck to the edge with maker’s mark and Imperial Warrant, inscribed on the edge, 84 standard

Prince Nikolai Leonidovich Obolensky (1878-1960), hailing from one of Russia’s oldest families, descended from the Rurik Dynasty with origins dating back to the 9th century. He was a Russian governor and member of the zemstvo. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the St Petersburg Imperial University in 1901, Nikolai Leonidovich occupied various administrative positions such as State Councilor, member of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, assistant of the Warsaw Governor-General as well as Governor of the Kharkov, Yaroslavl and Kursk Governorates. He was deeply respected and the present icon was gifted to him by the clerks of the Kursk chancellor’s office in 1915.
