Sam Lo | More Cultured (Than You Will Ever Be) 2.0

Sam Lo, also known by the moniker SKL0, is best known for their guerilla street art interventions in Singapore. Their work responds to the context, history and sensibilities of the subject matter with punchy humour and vibrant colours. More Cultured (Than You Will Ever Be) is a series of six circular spray-painted works that features the iconic Yakult bottle, with its label manipulated to show the artwork title. The line is based on a joke about a probiotic drink being more “cultured” than those claiming a superior sense of cultural appreciation. Meanwhile, the individual bottles are coloured according to that used for a particular global currency such as the US Dollar, British Pound, Renminbi etc. The series is a critique on how artworks function as assets or status objects in a market-driven art world, rather than as vessels of meaning. Viewers are invited to reflect on the uneasy intersection of creativity, commerce and cultural capital in contemporary art.

SKL0 has presented their works in galleries and public spaces in Singapore and internationally, and at venues such as Art Central Hong Kong and Lodhi Art Colony in New Delhi. They have also been commissioned by Singapore Art Museum and National Heritage Board, among others. Beyond their role as a visual artist, they were also the Art Director for National Day Parade 2025, CHINGAY 2023 and 2024.
