Yeo Tze Yang is a self-taught painter whose representational works capture the overlooked spaces in urban life. Driven by gut feeling, Yeo’s evocative style of realism reflects his relationship with the places, people, and things that surround him. Internet Café was first exhibited in Evening (2017), as part of a series of paintings themed around activities at dusk and with a moody overtone. The work depicts a darkened street scene, with harsh corridor lights throwing the entrance of an internet café into sharp relief. While the city is winding down at the end of a day, the painting suggests a different rhythm of life after one enters through the door.
Yeo has had seven solo exhibitions in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and has participated in regional shows and art fairs in Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. In 2016, he received the Silver Award at the UOB Painting of the Year competition. His works are in the collections of the National University of Singapore and United Overseas Bank, and private collections across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.
