Harry Winston

Born in New York City, Harry Winston (1896 – 1978) demonstrated a great acuity for evaluating precious gemstones from an early age. His talent for sourcing and fashioning the world’s finest stones led Cosmopolitan magazine to crown him the ‘King of Diamonds’ in 1947, a title that continues to be associated with the Winston name to this day.

Over his long and storied career, Harry Winston purchased many historical gemstones including the legendary Hope diamond, Catherine the Great’s sapphire and the Jonker diamond which he presented in his ‘Court of Jewels’, an exhibition designed to share, and promote, exquisite jewels with a wider audience. After World War II, Harry Winston introduced his now iconic cluster style in which groups of variously shaped diamonds are grouped together like tight bouquets with minimal metal showing and often centering around larger, important diamonds or colored stones. This concept has remained a constant ever since, lending jewels by Harry Winston a timeless aesthetic and appeal.
