This terracotta medallion by Jean-Baptiste Nini, depicts Benjamin Franklin in left-profile, wearing a fur cap. He is presented on a truncation crowned cartouche, flanked by palm fronds, his hand guiding a kite.

Nini captures both the likeness and the spirit of Franklin during his celebrated diplomatic mission to France, where he worked to secure French support for American independence. This finely modeled plaque reflects Franklin’s distinctive appearance and character, and the production of such medallions served not only as portraiture but also as political and cultural instruments, promoting France’s engagement with America.
