Vercellana family

Sotheby’s Paris, 13 May 2014, lot 125

The arms are those of the Vercellana family probably for Rosina Vercellana (1833-1885).

Rosina Vercellana was the daughter of a Napoleonic imperial guard, born in Nice in 1833. In 1847, she met Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel, the future king of Italy, and became his mistress for many years. She was given the title of Countess of Mirafiori and Fontanafredda, and the couple had two children. After becoming king, Victor Emmanuel II continued his relationship with the beautiful Rosina, whom he married morganatically in 1869. Upon the king's death in 1878, Rosina moved into the Pise Beltrami palace, where she died in 1885.
