Description

modelled seated wearing classical drapery on a rockwork base, with her right arm raised, holding wax tablets in her left hand, the front of the base impressed CALLIOPE and the right side G. VOLPATO ROMA.

This biscuit figure of the Muse Calliope, the muse of epic poetry, is identical to the one forming part of the dessert (centrepiece) executed by Giovanni Volpato between 1786 and 1800, now in the Museo Civico of Bassano del Grappa (Honour and Melegati 2003, no. 6). It was modelled after the marble statue of Hadrian age from the Boncompagni Ludovisi collection, now in the Museo di Palazzo Altemps, Rome.
