shaped-rectangular, the openwork border composed of winged-putti, birds and squirrels playing in a network scrolls, at the top a cartouche engraved with a presentation inscription to Sir George and Lady Williams from the YMCA, on a velvet-covered easel backing,


height 82cm., 32 1/4in.

Sir George Williams (1821-1905) was an English philanthropist, businessman and founder of the Young Men's Christian Association. He was apprenticed in a draper's shop, later marrying the owner's daughter and becoming the manager of the firm. He founded the group in response to the poor living conditions of young working men in London.
