FORMERLY IN THE COLLECTION OF OSCAR MONNIG

This meteorite was found in July 1950 outside of the town of Belle Plaine in southern Kansas. It was once owned by Oscar Monnig, one of the most important meteorite collectors of the 20th century. Although it may be an "ordinary" chondrite, its size, weight, and unbelievable mix of black and green inside, with a light apple-green chondrule located prominently at the bottom, make it a sight to behold. The light brown outer crust provides a beautiful contrast to the dark coloration inside. A 17-gram piece of this meteorite was sent to the Smithsonian shortly after it was found, and remains there today.
