A vari-colour gold and diamond-set verge watch with matching vari-colour gilt-metal chatelaine

Circa 1770


• Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, polished steel end-cap, silver regulation plate, fusee and chain, turned pillars, plain flat three-arm balance, signedL'Epaute, à Paris

• Dial: white enamel, Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute ring, paste-set filigree hands, signed L'Epaute, à Paris

• Case: gold, back centred with applied diamond-set amphora against applied vari-colour gold garlands, framed by diamond-set border and surmounted by a diamond-set crown, further decorated to the outside and bezels with vari-colour gold garlands and repeating asymmetric motifs, pendant surmounted by a diamond, inside case back with maker's mark J?F (possibly JJF or JFF) beneath a crown, pendant with control marks

• Chatelaine: gilt-metal chatelaine, the panels decorated with applied vari-colour decoration depicting flowers and foliage all heightened with radiating diamond-set star-form motifs, the pendant hook with larger but similarly decorated panel, the four outer pendant chains terminating respectively with a blank vari-colour seal, miniature ceramic of a child inscribed to the base 'l'eu fais d'image', a key and a polychrome enamel painted lid
