A gilt-bronze and cloisonné enamel 'Lion' vase

Ming dynasty, 16th-17th century


depicting four multi-coloured Buddhist lions frolicking among auspicious items and vying for beribboned brocade balls, above four celestial horses galloping on a wavy sea and beneath a band of white-ground lappets and ruyi borders encircling the shoulder, the neck decorated with lotus heads, all reserved on a turquoise ground inlaid with scrolling clouds extending onto the base
